Conceived in 2006, ((audience)) is an unprecedented project that explores the cinema as a 21st century concert hall. It is dedicated to the advancement of aural arts by providing wide distribution and new contexts for works by emerging and established sound artists and composers.

This year Festival is calling for 5.1 sound works to be performed in dark with a full 5.1 cinenma system during a 2 h 1/2 “sound film”. This “cinema in the dark” program will tour to partnering organization from Dehli to Montreal.

The deadline for the sumbission of the multichannel sound works is September, the 5th. Submission are encouraged either by sound artists and composers and by sound designers, foley artistis, sound engineers.

Cinesonika call for works and papers

The first Cinesonika Festival, held by the Simon Fraser University of Interactive Arts&Technology of Surrey, Canada, is calling for works in the field of sound design and sonification for the moving image.

The theme of this international film and video festival is to celebrate the soundtrack. Usually in cinema festivals there is a fixation on movie stars, or captivating imagery, or the literary qualities of screenplays, or the abstract concepts of film theory. Sound tends to be relatively unvalorized in moving-image making. The intent of the festival is to give attention to innovative work in the creation of film and video soundtracks, and to give due credit to the importance of audio in audiovisual media. This first annual festival will showcase international works of film and video with fascinating soundtracks, idiosyncratic sound design, eclectic scoring and innovative approaches to the sound-image relationship.

Deadline is the 1st of September for your audiovisual works, and the 31st of July for your papers’ abstract. The full paper deadline is set by the 15th of September.

Johan Primero brings a Citroën 2CV to a sound design studio

We’re living very strange days: sound professionals are very tough people, they know their work sometimes could be very hard, like recording sound underwater, following crazy seals vocals or jumping inside a very very noisy car.

Everything starts with Johan Primero, Johan Kramer‘s new movie, an extraordinary story of love and devotion to the world of football. In few words: Johan Puig is a 42 years-old man who drives his car 50 times a day around the stadium of FC Barcelona, in order to bring luck to his loved spanish club. And what a big surprise: Johan’s home is the sexy & vintage Citroën 2CV.

The entire movie is based on the relationship between the actors and the car, so we can imagine what kind of problems were born when designing the whole soundscape. The solution was around the corner: to bring the car to the recording studio!

Johan Kramer and his assistant Andreas Pasvantis decided to make a short film about this extraordinary situation, to document the great work of sound design made for the movie. The video was directed, filmed and edited by Andreas himself.

The company which accepted this challenge is FC Walvisch, a sound studio of Amsterdam (The Netherlands), specialized in making sound and music for commercials, films, music videos, games and online media.

L’ottavo International Symposium della School of Sound di Londra

Un nuovo appuntamento dai nostri amici della School of Sound di Londra. Dal 15 al 18 Aprile 2009, presso la Purcell Room della Queen Elizabeth Hall, in Southbank Centre, London SE1, sarà possibile assistere a una serie di incontri dedicati al sound design per film, al documentary sound, alla composizione e al songwriting, alle produzioni sperimentali, a radio e sound art, e infine alla neurologia dell’ascolto.

Ecco la lista degli speaker:

Report workshop Sound design: nuove forme di comunicazione creativa al Festival della creatività

Pubblichiamo finalmente il report e alcuni estratti sonori del workshop Sound Design: nuove forme di comunicazione creativa, che abbiamo organizzato il 26 ottobre al Festival della Creatività di Firenze.

Nello stupendo e molto (troppo) affollato scenario della Fortezza da Basso abbiamo avuto l’occasione di fare una bella chiaccherata con Valerio Murat, Davide Rocchesso, Matteo Milani, Enrico Ascoli e Nicola Torpei.

La parte iniziale del workshop è stata dedicata alla presentazione degli ospiti e dei temi che sarebbero stati affrontati. Dopodichè ogni argomento è stato introdotto da una domanda preceduta da un breve video o da una serie di immagini significative.

Sono sicuro che la maggiorparte di coloro che segue sounDesign sta preparando le orecchie per Il Cavaliere Oscuro di Christopher Nolan.

Sono andato a vederlo qualche giorno fa, ovviamente in uno quei cinema della periferia cittadina che assomiglia più a un’astronave di McDonald che a un luogo in cui poter confrontare la potenza sonora della produzione audio moderna con i principi dell’audiovisione del caro Michel Chion.

A ogni modo, devo dire la verità : questo post non vuole rivelare un giudizio sul sound design del film del pipistrello, bensì è un pretesto per presentare una grande risorsa.

Ricorderete tutti il bel post di Gianpaolo sull’ottimo sound design in Paranoid Park…lo ricorderete anche perchè i vostri commenti non sono certo mancati, e tutti concordavano sull’ottimo lavoro che il sound design aveva portato avanti assieme a Gus Van Sant con cui collabora da lungo tempo. Pochi mesi dopo, ecco una brutta sorpresa…

A Vancouver la scuola di Sound design for Visual media

Vancouver Film School

Uno degli argomenti più frequenti nelle mail che ci arrivano è la richiesta di conoscere scuole, master e corsi dedicati alla progettazione del suono. Purtroppo le risposte che spesso diamo non sono delle più incoraggianti.

Master che non partono (usate il nostro motore di ricerca!), corsi su cui si discute intensamente (usate il nostro motore di ricerca!!!). In poche parole il mondo della formazione italiano ha un serio problema: il sound design.

E allora? Fuga di cervelli? Why not?

E’ da diverso tempo infatti che seguo le vicende del corso di Sound design for Visual Media presso la Vancouver Film School.
