Panel discussion: What will the car of the future sound like?

The second edition of the Audio Branding Congress was held in Hamburg at the conference rooms of the Dialog im Dunkeln, an amazing exhibition located in the old warehouse district called Speicherstadt. As for the last year the congress was organized by the Audio Branding Academy, an indipendent institution founded in 2009 by Cornelius Ringe, Kai Bronner and Rainer Hirt, with the aim to promote the connection between sound and brand communication.

The title of this edition was Driven by Sound and the main topics were two: the relationship between multisensory design & brand experience and the sound of the electric cars in the future.

I and Sara were invited to present Sound for Electric Vehicles, the work we are conducting in Lorelei for the FIAMM Group, the italian company leader in the market of horns and acoustic devices.

LIVE!IXEM festival, october 2010, Italy

LIVE!IXEM 2010 is the international festival of music, mixed media and experimental electronic arts promoted by AntiTesi (Domenico Sciajno) and U.S.O. Project (Matteo Milani and Federico Placidi) in collaboration with O’ and Die Schachtel, which will held in Italy on october.

The VII edition of the festival is organized in two appointments: a preview event in Turin on 8th october and the real festival in Milan on 29th-30th october.

One of the most important events of the festival is Movimenti di immagini acustiche, a workshop dedicated to field recording (subscription fee: 60 euro, 15 partecipants).

This year Live!iXem has a twin-festival: Ear to the Earth 2010 - Water and the World, an event promoted by the Electronic Music Foundation, which will held in NYC.

Another good news for all the sound professionals who are interested in field recordings: our friends Matteo Milani & Federico Placidi from U.S.O. Project and the italian musician Domenico Sciajno organized Movement of acoustic images, a workshop curated by Fabio Orsi and Alessandro Massobrio, which will be held in Milan (Italy) from 29th to 30th October 2010, during the 7th edition of Live!iXem, an international festival of music, mixed media and experimental electronic art, promoted by AntiTesi.

We had a friendly email exchange with Matteo, Federico, Domenico, Fabio and Alessandro in order to have some more information on the festival and the workshop.

Design o’ the times panel at Interferenze Festival

Some days ago we came back from Interferenze new arts festival in Italy, where we were invited to present Design o’the times, a panel/performance based on the concept of Time Design promoted by Albert Mayr.

The first part of the panel was dedicated to the presentation of the contributions we requested to some sound professionals and musicians we respect a lot: Kim Cascone, Unidentified Sound Object, Miguel Isaza, Stefano Delle Monache and Andrew Spitz; while the second part consisted of a live performance based on Mayr’s work, directed by Luigi Mastandrea and performed by Enrico Ascoli, Alessandro Capozzo, Yasuhiro Morinaga and Pasquale Napolitano.

We thank a lot all the people who were involved in this project, they were amazing, we will call’em our Friends of Sound, because they are contributing to create a brand new community of professionals, artists, researchers and musicians working in the field of sound and audio design.

The contributions of the first part of the panel where created based upon an abstract of the work of Mayr we sent by e-mail. At the end we asked:

What if you were asked to virtually participate in this collective creative effort to musically re-design time? How would you interpret your given one-hot-minute?

Call for works Premio Germi 2010, Italy

Composers of any age or nationality may submit Works scored for Ensemble Spaziomusica: from a minimum of one to a maximum of four performers, without conductor, according to the following instruments: flute, piano, soprano voice and percussion with or without electronics. No Live Electronics. Duration: between 4 and 12 minutes.

Deadline: October, 04 2010 Entry fee: euro 50 for one score, and euro 30 per score if more than one is submitted.

Awards: The three winning scores will be performed, publlshed and recorded. First piece will be awarded a cash prize of euro 1.000,00 (one thousand). The score sheet and the audio CD will be published by Casa Editrice Sconfinarte. Three selected works will be performed during the 2nd International Composition Competition PREMIO G.E.R.M.I. 2010 and will be replayed during the 4th edition of the REBUS FESTIVAL which will be held in Milan in October 2011.

Interferenze new arts festival in Italy

Interferenze Festival

If you have someone in love living in Italy you know that we’re famous not only for pizza or mandolino (nice tool for the experimental sound designer…), but also because we got heart. Yes, we have a big heart. And some events can be organized only by people with a lot of heart. Like this festival.

Interferenze is an event dedicated to art and new technologies that will held in Italy from 23th to 25th July 2010. The location of this edition is the town of Bisaccia, placed along the eastern slopes of the hills of Irpinia. For three days this will be the place in which international artists, musicians, curators and researchers will meet together and give their contributions for workshops, concerts, live performances and installations.

We’ll be part of this big family, because I, Sara and Luigi Mastrandrea will lead a panel/workshop on Saturday 24th July called Design o’ the times, based on the concept of Time Design promoted by Albert Mayr.

Finally, we had a very deep and interesting digital conversation with Leandro Pisano, curator, writer and director of the festival, to know more about this amazing event in which Sound has inevitably a predominant role.

Call for papers and cases for Audio Branding Congress 2010

The Audio Branding Academy is organizing the 2nd Audio Branding Congress that will held in Hamburg on November 5th 2010.

The Academy is promoting two different calls for submission for this editions of the congress: papers and cases.

Call for papers

A call for scientific papers for researchers in the fields of Sound and music in corporate communications and Multisensory Branding/Design. Best submissions will be presented as a talk or as a poster within a scientific forum.

Submission deadline: August 31, 2010.

Call for cases

A call for best practice cases for brands and agencies in the field of Audio branding and Music marketing. The most interesting cases will be presented on the website of the Audio Branding Academy to let the public vote on them. Cases which received the most votes will be presented at the Audio Branding Congress 2010 and published in the Audio Branding Academy Yearbook.

Submission deadline: July 30, 2010.

Ear to earth festival in Italy, 25-27 June, 2010

Orecchio alla Terra is the first european edition of Ear to earth, the festival of sound-art, video-art, music and ecology of New York, USA.

The festival will held in Pesaro and Urbino, 25 - 27 June, 2010, Italy, and is organized by the Conservatorio Statale di Musica G. Rossini, in collaboration with the Electronic Music Foundation (New York, USA) and the Mostra Internazionale del Nuovo Cinema (Pesaro, Italy).

Transmediale award 2011 call for entries

The Transmediale Award and Vilém Flusser Theory Award 2011 call for entries is open and searches for entries about visionary, adventurous and critical forms of digital expression, interaction, and collaborative practice.

Jury of the transmediale Award 2011 are Marisa Olson (New York), Matteo Pasquinelli(Amsterdam), Brandon Labelle (Berlin), Thomas Macho (Berlin), Defne Ayas (Shanghai)

Applications may be submitted until the deadline July 31, 2010. The festival will held in Berlin in 1-6 february 2011.

A summer school in Finland for product sound design

Product Sound Design Summer School

We just posted about Sonic Interaction Design and the importance of the COST Action IC0601 on SID for the development of this new discipline, which is gaining a relevant role in the world of sound design.

Some members of the SID Action and the Design Factory of the Aalto University organized the Product Sound Design Summer School in August 23-26 2010, at Espoo, Finland, with the aim to educate the future product design and development team members with a specific competence on interactive sound.

Sound with Ray Beckett: Q&A at the London Film School

On Thursday 3rd June 6pm, Ray Beckett, regular collaborator with Ken Loach and Oscar-winning Location Sound Mixer on The Hurt Locker, will discuss his work with Larry Sider from the School of Sound, illustrated by film clips, including The Hurt Locker, Land and Freedom and The Wind That Shakes the Barley.

SonorApuliae open call to create a sound map in Italy

SonorApuliae / Taranto Sonora is a workshop with the aimt to build an happening based on the sounds of the old town of Taranto (Italy), from 11th august to 17th august 2010.

The project will mix sound design, musical experimentation and active citizenship in order to produce a sound archive online (sound cards) of the town and a final performance.

The entry form must be completed in all fields and sent via email no later than the deadline of July 20 2010 at the following email address: [email protected].

sounDesign sketches sounds at the IV Italian Information Architecture Summit

The IA Summit is one of the most important italian events dedicated to the themes of Information Architecture, User Experience and Information Design. The 4th edition of the summit took place in Pisa on 7-8th May 2010 and was organized by Dario Betti, Andrea Resmini, Alberto Mucignat and Luca Rosati. Among the speakers of this year we can remember professionals and researchers from many fields of the IA, like: Andrew Hinton, Jason Hobbs and Federico Fasce.

I and Sara were invited to present Sketching in Audio Design, a paper describing some techniques and methodologies of sound & audio design we are experimenting with Lorelei in a project for the english studio Architects of Air. It was very interesting, because we compared our sound-oriented approach with the traditional way of thinking of user experience designers and information architects, more used to deal with textual information than audio samples. We had a lot of fun and we also won the prize for the best presentation of the summit. We want to thank all the people who appreciated and voted this work. Below there are the slides of our presentation, the video is coming, so stay tuned on this post.

NU fest 2010 Padova, Italia

Dal 19 febbraio al 26 febbraio e il 5 marzo 2010 si terrà a Padova la quarta edizione di Nu Fest, festival di musica elettronica.

Come ogni anno il programma è molto interessante. Dal punto di vista musicale segnaliamo la presenza di Mira Calix, Christian Fennesz (con il nostro Giuseppe La Spada) e Jon Hopkins. Per quanto riguarda i workshop ricordiamo i seguenti appuntamenti:

  • Tonewheels di Derek Holzer (progettazione di un sintetizzatore ottico)
  • L’installazione sonora di Lars Lundehave Hanses (tecniche non convenzionali per la gestione di speaker tradizionali)
  • Video arte tra vecchio e nuovo di Carlo Zoratti e Marco Mucig (tecniche di manipolazione real time di immagini in performance video).

Sonic Interaction Design a DUE.1 festival di Digital User Experience

Talvolta il Suono riesce a entrare nei posti più rumorosi. Il 4 febbraio abbiamo partecipato alla conferenza sull’Interaction Design organizzata all’interno di DUE.1, festival di Digital User Experience tenutosi presso l’accademia NABA di Milano.

Gli interventi della conferenza, peraltro moderata dal pirotecnico Paolo Conti, si sono sviluppati su tre direzioni diverse, a seconda delle tematiche affrontate. Un primo gruppo, costituito dalle presentazioni di Massimilliano Gusmini, Paolo Atzori e Paolo Rigamonti, ha trattato la parte più sperimentale dell’interaction design, tramite i suoi legami con l’architettura, le performance e le installazioni artistiche. Un secondo gruppo, formato dalle presentazioni di Luca Mascaro, Alberto Mucignat e Paola Sales, si è concentrato invece su una parte più teorica, descrivendo alcune tecniche di lavoro user-centered in ambiti crossmediali. Un ultimo gruppo tematico ha presentato infine i risultati ottenuti tramite la pratica dell’interaction design, con lo showcase dell’agenzia Frog Design da parte di Fabio Sergio e il case history SAECO presentato da Angelo Rondi di UMANIA.

Il nostro intervento Sonic Interaction Design ha avuto l’obiettivo di descrivere il rapporto tra Suono e Interattività a una platea per la maggiorparte orientata al design dell’interazione tradizionale, quello legato al visual design e alla user experience nei media digitali. La nostra presentazione si è basata inizialmente sull’immenso lavoro fatto dal COST Action IC0601 on SID, partito nel 2006 e ancora attivo in questo ambito (seguitelo…è un ordine…), per poi illustrare alcuni case histories in diversi contesti produttivi. Giovedì 4 febbraio saremo presenti alla conferenza sull’Interaction Design nell’ambito di DUE.1, festival di Digital User Experience organizzato dall’agenzia milanese Nel segno dell’8.

Il festival si terrà a Milano il 4 e 5 Febbraio 2010 presso NABA Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti, via Carlo Darwin, 20, e il 6 febbraio 2010 presso Young & Rubicam Brands in via Tortona, 37.

La conferenza partirà alle 15,00 nella sala 77 dell’edificio 8 della sede NABA. Il nostro intervento si chiamerà Sonic Interaction Design e sarà ovviamente dedicato alle ultime frontiere del Suono in ambito interattivo.

Sonic Acts XIII Amsterdam

The Poetics of Space è il titolo del tema dell’edizione 2010 di Sonic Acsts XIII, festival dedicato alle esplorazioni dello spazio nell’arte, scienza, musica e tecnologia, che si terrà as Amsterdam dal 25 al 28 febbraio.

Il programma è veramente interessante. Saranno presenti personaggi come Brandon Labelle, Derrick de Kerckhove, Barry Truax, Michael J. Morgan.

Il costo dei biglietti non è eccessivo e Amsterdam non è così lontana…


Miraloop Diamonds @ galleria Neon Bologna

Sabato 12 dicembre alle 20 presso la galleria Neon di Bologna (via Zanardi 2/5) si terrà la presentazione dell’etichetta discografica Miraloop Diamonds. Particolarità: Diamonds pubblica musica elettroacustica, storica ed attuale, e musica di ricerca. Nel corso della serata si potranno ascoltare il sound e visual artist Michele Spanghero (Unsound Zero) in una performance elettroacustica, e Paolo Ingrosso che si occuperà di ricostruire un brano storico del Maestro Albert Mayr, centrato sull’improvvisazione, il Tape for Live Musicians eseguito per la prima volta a New York nel 1971.

Sengnaliamo altri due appuntamenti proposti da Tempo Reale nell’ambito del progetto Playlist - dedicato alle playlist presentate da compositori elettroacustici che ne curano anche la regia del suono. Sabato 12 dicembre alle 17 presso Villa Strozzi (a Firenze) tocca ad Andrea Ferrara aka Ongakuaw e il 30 gennaio, stessa ora, al nostro Lelio Camilleri. Al termine degli incontri c’è sempre l’appuntamento-aperitivo con la Wine List. L’ingresso è gratuito. Il 18 dicembre, dalle 10 ale 15, presso il Saloncino del Teatro della Pergola di Firenze (via della Pergola, 18) Francesco Giomi terrà una lezione sul sound design dedicata al progetto sonoro per la danza e il teatro. David Zicarelli a Roma durante l'anteprima italiana di Max For Live

E’ stato rilasciato da una sola settimana ed è già destinato a cambiare pesantemente il modo di pensare di tutti coloro che lavorano con il Suono. Max for Live è una delle novità più discusse nel campo dei software audio dell’ultimo anno. Fosse solo per l’accordo tra due colossi inarrivabili come Ableton e Cycling ’74.

La prima release di Max for Live viene presentata ufficialmente in Italia a Roma l’1 dicembre 2009, durante la seconda giornata del Master Class Real Time Performance & Interactive Systems Using Max 5 organizzato dal Centro Ricerche Musicali. A presentare il software c’è proprio lui: David Zicarelli, leggendario sviluppatore di Max/MSP, nonchè fondatore di Cycling ’74.

Silence 2009 festival internazionale di musica acusmatica

L’edizione del festival di musica acusmatica Silence si terrà a Bari dal 27 al 29 novembre a Bari presso l’Istituto Gorjux a Mungivacca, con la direzione artistica di Franco Degrassi.

Il programma presenta le opere di autori come: P.Henry, M.Chion, I.Malec, H.Pousseur e T.Takemitsu. Alcune delle opere saranno eseguite con l’acusmonium M.ar.e , un sistema di proiezione del suono costituito da un trentina di altoparlanti e da una dozzina di amplificatori, costruito a Bari due anni fà, unico nel suo genere in Europa.

L’ingresso al festival è libero.

Il Centro Ricerche Musicali di Roma organizza la masterclass Performance in Tempo Reale e Sistemi Interattivi con Max 5, un evento di 6 giorni ( dal 30 Novembre al 5 Dicembre 2009) presso la Sala da Concerto di Macro Future (Ex Mattatoio), Scuola popolare di Musica di Testaccio.

Il gruppo dei docenti è veramente di alto livello:

  • David Zicarelli, primo sviluppatore di Max e fondatore della Cycling 74;
  • Lorenzo Seno, fisico, direttore scientifico del Centro Ricerche Musicali, docente di Elaborazione del Segnale presso il Conservatorio Casella di L’Aquila;

Audio Branding Congress 2009

L’Audio Branding Academy organizza la prima edizione dell’Audio Branding Congress, che si terrà ad Amburgo (Germania) il 14 novembre 2009.

L’Accademia, fondata nel febbraio 2009 da Cornelius Ringe, Kai Bronner e Rainer Hirt, è una delle prime istituzioni completamente dedicate allo studio della comunicazione sonora e dell’audio branding.

Il programma del congresso è ovviamente imperdibile:

I posti disponibili sono solamente 120, sono previsti biglietti standard (400 euro) e ridotti (150 euro). Sono disponibili accrediti per giornalisti.

Sincronie è un festival di musica contemporanea che si terrà a Milano da giovedì 29 ottobre a venerdì 11 dicembre 2009. Il tema di quest’anno è il rapporto tra musica e numero.

  • 11 dicembre, ore 21.00 c/o Luogo da definire, Milano: Numeri in evoluzione, presentazione/videoscreening/concerto a cura di Marco Mancuso/Digicult. L’evento si traduce in una presentazione e concerto degli ultimi lavori del gruppo audiovisivo Semiconductor, pionieri dell’analisi diretta tra suono-immagine e codice, che ha intrapreso un percorso di ricerca nella rappresentazione audiovisiva di fenomeni elettromagnetici basati su dati scientifici e informazioni matematiche grezze e non riprocessate. L’evento è inoltre arricchito da un videoscreening che mette in evidenza alcuni esempi di artisti che lavorano sul rapporto tra suoni e immagini generati da fenomeni fisici, chimico-fisici, matematici, elettromagnetici e nanometrici. Emmanuel Favreau a Tempo Reale, 9 ottobre, Firenze

Il 9 ottobre ho assistito a Scolpire il suono, un incontro con Emmanuel Favreau, software engineer dell’INA-GRM di Parigi e principale creatore dei favolosi GRM tools, una serie di plugin per il sound processing utilizzati in molti campi come il sound design, la composizione musicale e le performance artistiche.

Favreau è un uomo molto tranquilo e pacato, non ha fretta di mostrare la nuova versione del software. Comincia il suo intervento proponendo l’ascolto di alcuni esempi elaborati tramite i suoi tools: un estratto della voce di Godard e il brano The shining space del compositore francese Daniel Teruggi. Siamo tutti immediatamente rapiti dal fascino dei plugin francesi.
